What happened
The US designated Ecuador’s Los Tiguerones drug-trafficking gang as a foreign terrorist organization after its armed takeover of a television studio during a live broadcast in 2024. During Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s visit, the US also announced a proposed $45 million security package, a $10 million anti-gold-mining and anti-gang initiative, and additional naval vessels.
